Ryan Paquet Bio

Ryan Paquet brings over 20 years of leadership in hazardous materials transportation safety, regulatory policy, and international standards development. Formerly Director of the Approvals and Permits Division at PHMSA (U.S. Department of Transportation), he has represented the U.S. at the UN Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and led global efforts on lithium battery standards. He is actively involved with the Medical Device Transport Council (MDTC), UN Informal Working Group on Lithium Batteries, and co-author of Mastering Lithium-Ion Battery Safety.

Session Description

The Medical Device Transport Council (MDTC) holds observer status at the United Nations Subcommittee of Experts for the Transport of Dangerous Goods and actively participates in its working groups on lithium battery classification and transport. An ongoing working group is developing a comprehensive framework that will influence testing, classification, and global transport requirements for lithium batteries and powered devices. In this focused 45-minute session, Ryan Paquet will unpack the current work of the UN Subcommittee, key proposed changes, and their direct implications for medical device manufacturers. Attendees will gain actionable insights on compliance strategies, risk mitigation, and how to navigate these developments to maintain efficient global supply chains while prioritizing safety and innovation.

Key Topics Include:

  • Latest updates from the UN Subcommittee and MDTC initiatives
  • Impacts on testing, classification, and shipping of lithium battery-powered medical devices
  • Practical considerations for manufacturers, including state-of-charge, packaging, and exemptions
  • Strategies to align with evolving international standards (UN, DOT, IATA, ICAO, and more)
  • Real-world examples and forward-looking recommendations for lithium battery-powered medical device compliance

Why Attend This Session?

  • Stay ahead of regulatory shifts that could affect product design, testing, logistics, and time-to-market
  • Learn directly from a former PHMSA leader and UN delegate with deep lithium-ion and medical device transport expertise
  • Network with peers facing similar challenges in the Innovation Spotlight Theater environment
  • Gain practical takeaways to strengthen your supply chain resilience amid growing demands for lithium power

This session is ideal for regulatory affairs professionals, quality engineers, supply chain managers, product developers, and medical technology executives responsible for global commercialization of battery-powered devices.
